Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs)
Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) are defined as the maximum concentration of pesticide residue likely to occur in or on food as a result of the use of pesticides according to good agricultural practices (GAP) and the product label recommendations.
MRL is the highest level of pesticide residue legally tolerated in or on food or feed. Relevant authorities set MRLs from multiple scientific trials that determine the maximum amount of residue that could remain on the crop when a pesticide is applied according to the product label instructions.
In accordance to food safety, it is important to understand more about MRL as an MRL violation is a sign that GAP was not adhered to, possibly risking harm to the environment, workers, and those who live nearby the spray site. In the case where MRL exceedance is confirmed, the produce is removed from the market and maybe destroyed at the owner’s expense.
MRLs are based on non-cancer health effects only and are not based on a consideration of cancer effects.
